In designing and placing wayfinding elements in this completely rebuilt anthroposophic nursing home, Appear played particular attention to how aging affects visual perception. Illustrative floor identifiers help the 35 residents, some of whom suffer from memory loss, orient themselves. Residents can also place a favorite picture under their room number. The expressive pictograms and font reflect Birkenrain’s humanistic values.
